- I'm trying to update my XCode for El Capitan. The App Store seems to download it (no clue where to find any progress bar on that) and it just spins for hours. Yes it's a big download but it doesn't progress overnight. So I chose to download it and I chose 11.3.1, which can't be run on El Capitan.
- Install the latest release of Xcode that runs on Mojave (currently Xcode 11.3.1). It can be downloaded from Apple's developer pages. From the same page, download a release of Xcode that supports iOS 13.4 (for example Xcode 11.4.1). Unzip it, rename it to 'Xcode-11.4.1.app' and move it to the Applications folder, but don't run it.

Step 1 – Get Xcode 11 beta from Apple developer’s page
Every year we get a new major iOS version to test our apps on. The lucky ones can immediately upgrade to the newest Xcode 12, building against the latest iOS 14 SDK. Some other, larger projects can take a while to get upgraded. Those projects have to be built with Xcode 11 in the meantime.

The latest version of Xcode that can be used with El Capitan is 8.2.1 see: Note that you must have macOS El Capitan 11. So I chose to download it and I chose 11.3.1, which can't be run on El Capitan. Login with your default Apple ID and password.
Once you have logged in successfully, you would be redirected to the actual downloads page. If you have not subscribed to the Apple Developer’s Annual plan; you would end up seeing an option to just download the beta version of Xcode 11 as seen in the screenshot below.
Click on the blue button to the right which say “Download” for the Xcode 11 beta.
Now begins the long wait to download the application (depending on your internet speed), the file size is around 7.1GB.

Once the file is downloaded, open the file or head to your “Downloads” folder to see the zip file and double click on the file.
Just a heads up, the unzipping process is going to take some time.

Step 2 – Install Xcode 11 beta
Installing Xcode 11 beta or any other application in macOS is a breeze.
Drag and drop the Xcode beta app icon from the “Downloads” folder to the “Applications” folder. That’s it!
Step 3 – Launch Xcode 11 beta
The excitement of trying out something new is unexplainable. Let’s go ahead and launch the new Xcode beta app.

- Go to your “Application” folder and double click on the “Xcode beta” app icon.
- Open “LaunchPad” and double click on the “Xcode 11 beta” app icon.
